The Leipzig Book Fair takes place March 13-16. This year, four Icelandic authors will be featured. You'll find the Icelandic booth at: Halle 4, C403. The featured Icelandic authors are Guðrún Helgadóttir, Steinunn Sigurðardóttir, Gerður Kristný and Auður Jónsdóttir, who all have freshly published titles in German.
Gerður Kristný's Die grüne Bluse meiner Schwester (lit. The Green Shirt of my Sister/Original title: Bátur með segli og allt) recently came out with the publishing house Ullstein Buchverlage GmbH, translated by Tina Flecken. Her children's book Die letzte Nacht des Jahres (The Last Night of the Year), was also published in German in 2011, translated by Karl-Ludwig Wetzig, and both books have attracted both attention and accolades in the German language area. Gerður will give readings in the Icelandic stand, as well as at naTo, the “long night of Nordic literature,” one of the highlights of the Leipzig Book Fair.
Guðrún Helgadóttir's children's book Blaubeeren und Vanilleeis (lBlueberries and Ice Cream/Original title: Bara gaman) was recently published by Dressler in translation by Anika Lüder-Wolff. Following an enthusiastic response in Germany, the title is now in its third printing. While Guðrún, who celebrates the fortieth anniversary of her literary career this year, is unfortunately unable to attend the book fair, the actress Nicole Haase will read from the book at the event Leipzig liest or “Leipzig reads.”
Steinunn Sigurðardóttir's Jojo, translated by Coletta Bürling, came out with the publishing house Rowohlt on March 7. Steinunn, who lives in Berlin, has previously had seven titles published in German. Steinunn will be the first author featured in the “Blue Sofa” at 10:30 AM on the opening day of the book fair, and will also give readings at the Icelandic stand and at the aforementioned naTo.
Auður Jónsdóttir's Jenseits des Meeres liegt die ganze Welt (Original title: Vetrarsól), translated by Kristof Magnusson came out 2011 when Iceland was Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair, published by Random House Verlag. Auður will give a reading in the Icelandic stand.
The schedule for the Icelandic authors can be found here.
Iceland's participation in the Leipzig Book Fair is organized by the Icelandic Embassy in Berlin, in collaboration with the Icelandic Literature Center and the other Nordic embassies in Berlin. The Nordic stand can be found at: Halle 4, C403.
