Promotion of Icelandic Literature Abroad

The role of the Icelandic Literature Center is to support the publication of Icelandic works of literature and the publication of literary works translated into Icelandic. Its role is also to raise awareness of Icelandic literature, both within Iceland and abroad, and promote its distribution - as well as nurture literary culture in Iceland.

  • London Book Fair

One of the main roles of The Icelandic Literature Center is to promote Icelandic Literature, both abroad and and within Iceland. Book fairs, Nordic cooperation, travel grants for authors and online marketing are some of the ways used to reach new readers and publishers.

Book Fairs

The Icelandic Literature Center takes part in the main book fairs abroad: London Book Fair, Frankfurter Buchmesse, Göteborg Book Fair and other locations. The Center introduces their brochure where various works and awards have been collected each year and consults publishers, translators and others who are interested in Icelandic literature. You can take a look at last years' brochure here on the right.

Nordlit cooperation

NordLit is an organisation of the Literature Centers in the Nordic countries. Alongside the Icelandic Literature Center, members are Norla in Norway, Fili in Finland, FarLit in the Faroese Islands, Statens Kulturråd/Swedish Arts Council in Sweden and Slots-og kulturstyrelsen/The Danish Arts Council in Denmark, Greenland and Sápmi.  This cooperation has been very fruitful as the Nordic centers help each other promoting literature across the Nordic countries. They also cooperate at Book Fairs and jointly facilitate grants for translating into the Nordic languages. In January every year, the staff at these Nordic Literature Centers meet and confer in one of the capital cities of the Nordic countries.

Travel and residential grants

The Center also gives out grants for authors to travel outside Iceland to promote their works as well as residential grants for translators who want to stay in Iceland while they work. Here you can find information on all the grants.
