All-time record! 92 subsidies for translations of Icelandic literature into 28 foreign languages in 2016

In 2016 the Icelandic Literature Center has subsidized the translations of 92 Icelandic works into foreign languages, which is an all-time record. Total number of applications was 97, including 19 applications for translations into Nordic languages.
In 2016, 92 subsidies for translations were awarded, which is the highest number so far. The subsidized translations include 28 target languages, of which the most-represented are English, French and German (10), Danish (8), Spanish (7) and Macedonian and Albanian (5).
The translations include novels, children's books, poetry and non-fiction. Last year, the ILC awarded 86 subsidies for translations of Icelandic works into 27 languages, so an increase in applications and subsidies awarded is evident.
Applications include translations of Upphækkuð jörð / The Rhubarb Girl by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir into Lithuinian and French, Rökkurbýsnir / From The Mouth of The Whale by Sjón into Romanian, Konan við 1000°/ The Woman at 1000° by Hallgrímur Helgason into English and Albanian, Lygi / Why did you lie? by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir in Spanish and Eitthvað á stærð við alheiminn / Something the Size of the Universe into Italian, German and Slovakian, and Fiskarnir hafa enga fætur / Fish have no Feet into English (UK) and Slovakian, both by Jón Kalman Stefánsson.
