Yrsa Sigurðardóttir

Icelandic authors and Icelandic literature have been displayed proudly and prominently at the Icelandic stand at the Göteborg Book Fair for some years and this year will be no different.

Icelandic authors Jón Kalman Stefánsson, Áslaug Jónsdóttir and Yrsa Sigurðardóttir will appear at various events during the Fair, which will take place on September 27 to 30. They will be speaking at events on the core role of fiction, crime novels, translations and illustrations.

Jón Kalman Stefánsson

Love, Crime, the Visual and Cultural Clashes

It should come as no surprise that Yrsa will be speaking on the ever-increasing popularity of the crime novel in the relatively non-violent society in Iceland. Jón Kalman will join translator John Swedenmark in a discussion on poetry as the fundament of the novel, as well as speaking on his own personal literary career and his latest novel, The Story of Ásta (Saga Ástu), accompanied by his Swedish publisher, Svante Weyler. Along with Stefan Eklund, editor of Borås Tidning, Jón Kalman will also address some big questions on life and the search for love and acknowledgment. Áslaug JónsdóttirÁslaug will take part in a discussion with journalist Gunnilla Kindstrand on the particular characteristics of Scandinavian illustrations and imagery and will also discuss the Arabic translations of her “Monster” series and the impact of the books in a cultural sphere drastically different from the Scandinavian environment with publisher Mona Henning from Dar Al-Muna.

The themes of this year´s Fair are “Respect” (respekt), “Images” (bild) and “Media and Expression” (mediafrågor) and this year, the crime fiction event Crimetime will be featured as a special section of the Fair, for the first time.
