More than hundred translated works from Icelandic into Polish

5. April, 2019

Edda is the first book translated from Icelandic into Polish, published in Poland in 1807!

Iceland will be the Guest of Honour at the Gdańskie Targi Książki literature festival in Gdansk, Poland, on 29th to 31st of March 2019. Icelandic literature and writers will be in focus as well as translations from Icelandic to Polish.

The first work to be translated into Polish was Edda in 1807 and since then more than 100 Icelandic books have been published in Polish translations. The next to be published in Poland were the books about Nonni, works by Gunnar Gunnarsson and Halldór Laxness, followed by books by contemporary authors such as Einar Kárason, Hallgrímur Helgason, Yrsa Sigurðardóttur, Sjón, Arnaldur Indriðason, Linda Vilhjálmsdóttur, Bragi Ólafsson, Sigríður Hagalín Björnsdóttir, Andri Snær Magnason, Steinar Bragi, Elísabet Jökulsdóttir & Jón Kalman Stefánsson, to name a few.

More than half of the 100 works were translated after the year 2000. The number of translations from Icelandic to Polish have increased in the last few years and hopefully it will go even higher after the Guest of Honour participation in Gdansk.

Here is a small example of Icelandic books in Polish translations.
