Thor Vilhjálmsson dies at 85

The author Thor Vilhjálmsson died on March 2, 2011, aged 85.

Thor - útlenskaThe author Thor Vilhjálmsson died on March 2, 2011, aged 85.  Prodigiously prolific throughout his career, Thor released his debut novel, Maðurinn er alltaf einn (lit. Man is Always Alone) in 1950. He received the Nordic Council's Literary Prize in 1988 for his novel Grámosinn glóir (published in 1995 by Mare's Nest as Justice Undone).

In addition to his literary work, Thor was a tireless advocate for free speech and the fine arts in Iceland. In a video interview with Sagenhaftes Island conducted shortly before his death, Thor revealed that he was working on new material: “There is a certain stubbornness to writing,” he said. “To keep on going – on and on and on...”
