Ásta Sigurðardóttir (1930-1971) was one of the significant women writers of her time. Among her best known works is the short story Sunday Evening Till Monday Morning from 1951, a story written in a progressive style and modernistic approach to narrative fascinated many Icelandic readers, but appalled a lot of others. A legendary portrait of Ásta smoking a cigarette, by noted photographer Jón Kaldal, evoked a rather similar reaction.
