Residential Grants offer translators proximity to Icelandic authors, language, and culture. The grants have been offered for 20 years!
Sixty-five residential grants have been allocated to translators of Icelandic literature working into 18 different languages for a residency at the guest apartment in Gunnarshús, Reykjavik.
The Icelandic Literature Center and the Writers’ Union of Iceland offer residency grants to translators of Icelandic literature into foreign languages. The grants are for up to four weeks stay in the guest residence in Gunnarshús – the house of the Writers’ Association in Reykjavik. The Writers’ Union provides the residence and the Icelandic Literature Center covers travel costs and a grant for living expenses. The goal with these grants is first and foremost to offer translators a chance to work in close proximity to the writers they are translating, Icelandic culture, and language. The Grants were first allocated in 2000, and have been every year since then.
Since 2000, 65 residential grants have been allocated to 47 translators working from Icelandic into 18 different languages. They have worked on their translations in the guest apartment, often in collaboration and in proximity with the authors of the works. Many have become renowned translators, receiving awards and acclaim for their work.
