Icelandic Authors

Andri Snær Magnason is one of Iceland's most celebrated writers. He has won the Icelandic Literary Prize for fiction, children's fiction and non-fiction. In addition, Magnason has written poetry, plays, short stories and essays. In 2009 Magnason co-directed the documentary Dreamland, which was based on his book Dreamland: A Self-Help Manual for a Frightened Nation. Magnason ran for president of Iceland in 2016 and came third out of nine candidates. Magnason lives in Reykjavik with his wife and four children.

Elísabet Kristín Jökulsdóttir (b.1958) has received several awards and recognition for her work. Her first poetry collection, Dans í lokuðu herbergi (Dance in a Closed Room) was published in 1989, and she has since released further poetry collections as well as novels for children and adults, short stories, and plays, and produced dance works and performances.

Elísabet is a two-time recipient of the Women's Literature Prize, for The Locksmith's Good Advice and for Love, a nervous wreck. No dancing at Coalfishrock, which became a nominee for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2016 and was nominated for the DV Cultural Prize 2015. Jökulsdóttir was also a candidate in the 2016 presidential election. She received The Icelandic Literary Prize 2020, in the category of fiction, for her autobiographical novel Aprílsólarkuldi (Sunny April Cold) and a nomination for the Women's Literature Prize.

Gerður Kristný is the author of more than 30 books and has received numerous prizes and accolades for her work, which has been translated into many languages. She proved herself as one of Iceland‘s most interesting poets with her first book and has since then published several books of poetry, as well as short stories, novels and children‘s books. Awards for her work include the Icelandic Literature Prize and a nomination for the Nordic Council Literary Prize, the Icelandic Journalist Award, the Icelandic Children‘s Book Award and The Halldor Laxness Literary Award. Her poetry and short stories have been included in school textbooks at the elementary and secondary level, as well as in anthologies published in Iceland and overseas.

Bergsveinn Birgisson holds a doctorate in Norse philology and has an expansive background in folklore, oral histories, and lyrical poetry. Birgisson is also happy having learnt about the cultural institution a sheep farm represents.

A true researcher at heart, Birgisson has spent his life studying language and how it represents the truth of the human condition. He currently resides in Bergen, Norway, where he continues to write classical tales.

Guðrún Eva Mínervudóttir (b. 1976) has earned herself a place among Iceland's most talented writers. Lani Yamamoto has written and illustrated six philosophical children's books, including the Albert series. Her most recent book, Egill spámaður, was nominated for the Nordic Council Children and Young People's Literature Prize, the Icelandic Literature Prize, and the Reykjavik Children's Book Award. Her previous book, Stína stórasæng, was nominated for the Nordic Council Children and Young People's Literature Prize and the Italian Scelte di Classe Award. It was awarded the Icelandic Women's Literature Prize and the Dimmalimm Illustration Award.

Lani holds a BA in psychology from Bryn Mawr College, a diploma in filmmaking from the London Film School, and master's degrees in both creative writing and the study of religions from the University of Oxford. In 2017, she was a Benediktson Fellow at the Leighton Artists Colony at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

Her first novel, Ours and Others', is currently shortlisted for the 2020 Novel Prize from Fitzcarraldo Editions, New Directions Publishing, and Giramondo Publishing.

Originally from Boston, Lani has lived in Reykjavík for the past 25 years.

Sólveig Pálsdóttir (b. 1959) graduated from The Icelandic Drama School, did her B.A. in literary theory at The University of Iceland and qualified as a certified teacher at the Teacher´s College of Iceland. Sólveig appeared in several plays at the National Theatre and various independent theatre productions, did radio and TV drama and voiceovers, to name a few. She also spent several years as a radio programmer and worked on cultural projects periodically. 

Sólveig received the The Drop of Blood – Best Icelandic Crime Novel of the Year award 2019 for her book Fjötrar.

Lilja Sigurðardóttir is an award-winning playwright, and an author of six crime novels. She has won the Icelandic Crime Fiction Award for her last two novels, Cage and Betrayal, and both titles represented Iceland at the Nordic Crime Fiction Awards. Sigurðardóttir has also been longlisted for a CWA International Dagger Award, Prix du Meilleur Polar at Points and Edinburgh International Book Festival's First Book Award. The film rights to her Reykjavik Noir trilogy (Snare, Trap and Cage) have been bought by Palomar Pictures in California.

Steinar Bragi (b. 1975), of Reykjavík, Iceland, is the author of several books of poetry and prose. Debuting as a 23-year-old with the critically acclaimed poetry collection Black Hole (1998), he later turned to prose with the novel Women, a claustrophobic abstraction of the price of being a woman under the male-driven capitalist society and misogynistic power structures that threaten to break the nation's economy. Women was later nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize. In the modern Icelandic saga The Ice Lands, Bragi's international breakthrough, Iceland's economic demise is revisited, with four victims of the financial crisis hurdling towards an unthinkable end during a nightmarish trip across the nations volcanic hinterlands. A nascent master of contemporary horror, Bragi illuminates the darkest corners of our collective psyche with Lovecraftian detail while in the vein of Stephen King. Steinar Bragi was nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 2022 for his sci-fi novel The Disturbance.

Halldór Guðmundsson was born in Reykjavík in 1956, brought up in Germany and studied in Denmark. He has worked as a publisher for Mál og menning, at that time Iceland's largest publisher, written several books, the most well known being a biography of the Icelandic Nobel prize laureate, Halldór Laxness, for which he was awarded The Icelandic Literary Prize for best work of non-fiction in 2004. He has also written Writer‘s Lives, a parallel biography of the writers Gunnar Gunnarsson and Þórbergur Þórðarson, and three books in German, among them one on the Icelandic financial crisis, Wir sind alle Isländer, together with Dagur Gunnarsson. For five years, Halldór Guðmundsson was the CEO of Harpa, the concert hall in Reykjavík. He has been the project manager for a Guest of Honour country at the Frankfurt book-fair twice; Iceland (2011), and Norway (2019).

Guðbergur Bergsson is one of Iceland's leading authors, the first one to win the coveted Icelandic Literary Prize twice, first in 1991 for the widely acclaimed The Swan and then in 1997 for the first volume of his biographical novel Father and Mother and the Mystery of Childhood, which was also nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1992. Ragnar Jónasson (b. 1976) is the award-winning author of the international bestselling Dark Iceland series and the Hidden Iceland series featuring Hulda. From the age of 17, Ragnar translated 14 Agatha Christie novels into Icelandic. Ragnar is a member of the UK Crime Writers' Association (CWA) and he is also the co- founder of the Reykjavik international crime writing festival Iceland Noir, and has appeared on festival panels worldwide.

Today, he lives in Reykjavik with his family, where he writes, works as a corporate lawyer, and teaches copyright law at Reykjavik University.

Steinunn Sigurðardóttir is one of Iceland´s most highly acclaimed novelists and poets and has sustained a writing career since 1969, as well as a distinguished career in journalism. She has contributed greatly to the international recognition of contemporary Icelandic literature, being one of the most frequently translated living Icelandic writers. Her first novel, The Thief of Time was made into a French feature film and later adapted to the stage by The National Theatre of Iceland. Gyrðir Elíasson (b. 1961) won the Nordic Council Literature Prize 2011 for his short story collection Milli trjánna (Among the Trees) „for stylistically outstanding literary art which depicts inner and outer threats in dialogue with world literature.” Elíasson made his debut in 1983. Throughout his literary career he has published a great number of works of short prose, lyric poetry and seven novels. He is also an avid translator, especially of books about and by American aborigines, and has translated four of Richard Brautigan's novels. In 2011 he sent forward a large collection of translated poetry, with poems by thirty-six poets from fifteen countries, for which he won the Icelandic translation prize.

Elíasson´s works include ten collections of short stories, seven novels, two collections of flash fiction and sixteen collections of poetry, apart from a number of books with translated poetry and fiction.

Einar Már Guðmundsson is one of the most widely translated Icelandic authors born in the postwar period. Gudmundsson has received many awards and distinctions for his books, such as the Norwegian Bjørnson Prize, the Scharnberg Memorial Award in Denmark, The Karen Blixen Medal, and The Giuseppe Acerbi Literary Prize in Italy. In 2012 Einar Mar Gudmundsson received the Swedish Academy's Nordic Prize, dubbed “The little Nobel”, for his contribution to literature.

Icelandic author Sigríður Hagalín Björnsdóttir (b.

Ásta Fanney Sigurðardóttir is a poet, visual artist and musician based in Reykjavík. She is widely considered one of the country's most innovative poetry performers and has read her work worldwide. Her first collection of poetry, Eilífðarnón (Forevernoon), was published in Iceland in 2019. Ásta studied visual art at the Iceland University of the Arts and graduated in 2012. She was a founding member of the art gallery Kunstchlager which operated in Reykjavík between 2012–2015. Her first chapbook, Herra Hjúkket (Mr Phew) was published in 2012 and in 2017 she was the recipient of the prestigious annual Ljóðstafur Jóns úr Vör poetry prize for a single unpublished poem. She has taken part in a variety of performances blending together music, visual art and poetry, and is a member of the electro-pop trio aiYa. She has been described by The Line of Best Fit as ‘one of Iceland's most prolific artists'.

Aðalsteinn Ingólfsson (b. 1948) is an art historian, curator, poet and translator, educated at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and the University of Lund, Sweden. He is the author and co-author of some 35 books on Icelandic art and culture. Two of his books have been nominated for the Icelandic Literary Prize in non-fiction category. He has curated well over 100 exhibitions of art in Iceland, Sweden and Canada and also lectured on Icelandic art in divers countries.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Ingolfsson was also active as a cultural editor of Icelandic newspapers and magazines. For his writings on Icelandic design he was awarded the prestigious Swedish Söderberg Prize in 1999, along with four other Scandinavian critics.

Kristín Ómarsdóttir was born in 1962 in Reykjavík. She has published eight collections of poetry, nine novels, six collections of short stories, and six staged plays. Ómarsdóttir has received almost every major Icelandic literary award, in almost every genre, including the DV Culture Prize for Literature, the Icelandic National Theatre Award for Playwright of the Year, the Maístjarnan Poetry Book of the Year Award, and the Icelandic Women's Literature Prize, to name just a few. She has also been shortlisted twice for the Nordic Council Literature Prize and four times for the Icelandic Literature Prize. Today she is one of Iceland's most celebrated living authors.

Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889–1975) grew up in considerable poverty at Valþjofsstadur farm in the Fljotsdalur district of East Iceland. Despite great difficulties, he became one of the most popular novelists in Denmark and Germany. His claim to fame began with his first novel, Af Borgslægtens Historie (translated into English as Guest the One-Eyed), which was published by Gyldendal in 1912-1914 and was filmatised by Nordisk Film in 1919 (the first Icelandic writing ever made into a movie). During the next two and a half decades, Gunnar wrote numerous novels, short stories, poems and plays, in addition to frequent articles as he participated actively in Nordic social discussions. A large number of his books were printed in many countries, though his popularity was concentrated in Denmark and Germany. One of his books, Ships in the Sky, made it to sixth place on the New York Times' bestseller list in 1938. The Good Shepherd (Advent) is the book that has appeared most frequently and is still widely read today.

Hallgrímur Helgason started out as an artist, showing his work in several galleries of both New York and Paris, where he lived in the late eighties and early nineties. He made his debut as a novelist in 1990 and gained international attention with his third novel, "101 Reykjavik", which was made into a film starring Victoria Abril. He has also written books of poetry, worked for film and theatre, and translated some of Shakespeare's plays into Icelandic. Four of his novels have been put on stage. In 2001 Helgason received the Icelandic Literary Prize for "The Author of Iceland." He has twice been nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize, with "101 Reykjavik" in 1999, and "Stormland" in 2007. A film based on the latter was released in early 2011.

Eva Björg lives with her husband and their three children in Reykjavík. She was born and raised in Akranes, a small town about half an hour drive from Reykjavík which is the scene of her first novel. After finishing a Bachelor's degree in Sociology she moved from Akranes to Trondheim, Norway, where she got her Master's degree in Globalisation. In 2018, Eva was the recipient of the Blackbird Award, a crime-writing prize hosted by prolific Iceland authors Yrsa Sigurðardóttir and Ragnar Jónasson.

Þórarinn Eldjárn (b.1949) is one of Iceland's most admired authors and the recipient of many awards. A superb poet, he has tackled almost every genre since his debut in 1974. He has published numerous collections of poetry and children's verse, short-story collections and novels as well as translating fiction for adults and children from English and the Scandinavian languages. Among them are works by Strindberg, Ibsen, HC Andersen and Göran Tunström; Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland as well as Shakespeare's King Lear, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Hamlet for the National Theatre.

Þórarinn's novel Brotahofud (The Blue Tower) was shortlisted for the Aristeion 1998 – the European literature and translation prize, nominated to the Nordic Council Literature Prize in 1999 and to the IMPAC Dublin award in 2001. Brotahofud has been published in English, Finnish, French, Danish and German translations.

Linda Vilhjálmsdóttir (b. 1958) is a poet, novelist, playwright and screenwriter. She was already known from her magazine contributions when her first collection, Bláþráður (Hanging by a Thread) was published in 1990, the best début by an Icelandic poet for a long time. Two aspects of Vilhjálmsdóttir's work were perhaps most striking: the depth she achieved in her introspective poems, and her original approach to nature poetry. Her second book, Klakabörnin (The Children of Ice, 1992), testified to her growing stature as a poet as she tackles perennial subjects such as human relationships and emotions with a singular lyrical sensitivity. In 2003 she published a semi-autobiographical novel: Lygasaga (Story of Lies).

Her plays have been staged at the Reykjavik City Theatre as well as other ventures.

Linda Vilhjálmsdóttir has received numerous prizes and awards for her literary work, including two literary awards from the daily newspaper DV, the Jón-úr-Vör Poety Award and the Icelandic Booksellers' Prize for the best volume of poetry in 2015. The volume frelsi (liberty) was also nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize (2017) and brought her the title “European Poet of Freedom” 2018 in Gdansk.
Her poems have been published in various anthologies in English, Swedish, French, German and Galician.

Ragnar Helgi Ólafsson (b. 1971) is an acclaimed Icelandic writer and visual artist. He debuted in 2013 with the novella Letters from Bhutan and has since published poetry, fiction and non-fiction. He also runs his own publishing house, Tunglið forlag, and is one of the editors of Ljóðbréf – A Journal of Contemporary Icelandic Poetry. Haukur Ingvarsson (b. 1979) is an Icelandic writer and literary scholar. He was a cultural journalist for the Icelandic Broadcasting Service for a decade. His first book of poetry, Niðurfall og þættir af hinum dularfulla Manga (Downfall and Episodes of the Mysterious Mangi), was published in 2005, followed by a book on the late novels of Icelandic Nobel laureate Halldor Laxness (2009) and the historical novel November 1976 (2011). For his latest book of poetry, Vistarverur (Ecostentialism) (2018), Ingvarsson won the prestigious Tomas Gudmundsson Literary Prize. Ingvarsson defended his PhD thesis on the reception of American novelist William Faulkner in Iceland in 2020. The thesis will be published by The Icelandic Historical Society in 2021. His forthcoming book of poetry is called Menn sem elska menn (Men Who Love Men ) - bio written by poet and friend Eiríkur Örn Norðdahl.

Bragi Ólafsson, born in Reykjavik is 1962, is an Icelandic writer of novels, short stories, plays and poetry. His novels are undoubtedly among the most original and remarkable Icelandic stories of recent years and he has also received critical acclaim for his plays, short stories and poetry. His subtle humor and ability to depict the extraordinary in ordinary life, often while painting a tragi-comic picture, make his work thrilling in a most unconventional way. Ólafsson's novel, The Ambassador (available in the US by Open Letter), received the 2006 Icelandic Bookseller's Award and was nominated for the Icelandic Literary Prize (as have other four of his eight novels to date), as well as the Nordic Council Literary Prize in 2008. Open Letter has also published Bragi's novels, The Pets and Narrator. His novel Party Games received the DV Cultural Prize in 2004, and the Icelandic Bookseller's Award. Two of Ólafsson´s plays were hugely successful, and his poetry and short stories have been translated into various languages.

Pedro Gunnlaugur García was born in Lisbon in 1983 – to an Icelandic mother and Portuguese father. Raised mostly in Reykjavík, he graduated from the University of Iceland with a Bachelor´s degree in Sociology and a Master's in Culture and Communication. He is known for his poignant and introspective works, use of magical realism and exploration of the complexities of human relationships and the challenges of intimacy and communication.

His first novel, Languageless (Málleysingjarnir, 2019), won himThe Grassroots grant from the Icelandic Literature Center and was well received by readers and reviewers alike for being powerful and written with uncommon assuredness for a debut. It‘s a surreal examination of the limits of humanity and language.
His second novel, Lungs (Lungu, 2022) was an immediate success and received the prestigious Icelandic Literary Prize 2022. Featuring life-saving olives, flying women, gigantic roosters, psychic sex and forbidden love, the story is propelled imaginatively from one generation to the next – encompassing many of life's tragedies and fleeting moments of happiness.

• Stefán Máni (b. 1970) was born and raised in a fishing village in western Iceland. At twenty-six, he relocated to Reykjavík to pursue a writing career, transporting all his belongings in an old car.

During the first decade of his career, Stefán balanced his writing with various jobs, including construction work, dishwashing, printing, and working in a home for the mentally ill. These diverse experiences enriched his storytelling.

His major breakthrough came with the thriller The Cursed Ship (previously published as The Ship), which garnered attention both in Iceland and internationally. This success paved the way for the popular Grimsson detective series, featuring detective Grimsson and other thriller and fiction works.

In 2012, his bestseller Black's Game was adapted into a film, becoming one of Iceland's highest-grossing movies, with director Nicolas Winding Refn involved in the production.

Auður Jónsdóttir (b. 1973) is one of the most accomplished authors writing in Icelandic today. Her novels have aroused interest in Iceland, as well as abroad, for their rare blend of incisive candor and humor.

She won the Icelandic Literary Prize for The People in the Basement and the Icelandic Women's Literature Prize for Secretaries to the Spirits. Both of these novels were nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize. Audur's novel, Quake, is probably her most successful publication to date and gathered a huge following among Icelandic readers of all ages, strengthening her position as an important writer of her generation. Quake was among World Literature Today‘s 75 most notable translations of 2022.

Jón Atli Jónasson is considered one of the foremost Icelandic playwrights. His plays have been performed in London, Paris, Berlin, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Athens. He has written several scripts for film, most notably The Deep, produced by 101 Studios Iceland, based on his own play. It was shortlisted for The 85th Academy Awards for best foreign feature 2015.

Jón Atli has been nominated for The Nordic film price on three occasions. He was chosen the Nordic Radio Dramatist in 2011. Jón Atli has also written three novels, a short story compilation and a novella. His serialized radio drama based on the Guðmundur and Geirfinnur case (Iceland's most notorious criminal case) won third price at Prix Europa in 2017.

His latest work is the crime novel, Breathless, published by Storyte Iceland. Jón Atli co-wrote the first season of the crime TV. series Arctic Circle (Ivalo) in 2017 which was produced by Yellow film in Finland, Bavaria Films in Germany.

Arndís Þórarinsdóttir (b. 1982) is an award-winning Icelandic writer and translator. Before becoming a full-time writer, Arndís worked as a journalist and critic and was the head of department at the library in Kópavogur. She writes for children of all ages, but the most recent works are for middle grade and young adult readers. Whether her stories deal with emotional development and complexities of growing up or pacy adventures, they are always written with warmth and humour.
Her novel Somersault has won Icelandic Women's Literature Prize,
Icelandic Literature Prize in Children's category and The Reykjavík
Children's Book Award, and it was nominated for the Nordic Council Prize in 2022.
